OPAL (Outdoor Play And Learning)
OPAL (Outdoor Play And Learning) at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary is a whole-school approach that helps children enjoy high-quality play outdoors every day. We create a safe, welcoming environment where pupils can be active, curious and independent, supported by clear routines and thoughtful supervision.
Our OPAL programme focuses on improving the quality of play through well-planned outdoor spaces, accessible resources and opportunities for children to choose activities that suit their interests. From structured play to free play, children learn important social skills such as sharing, negotiating and problem-solving, while also developing confidence and resilience.
We work closely with staff to ensure outdoor learning is consistent and inclusive for all children. Parents can support OPAL by encouraging their child to dress appropriately for the weather and to talk about what they enjoyed during outdoor play.
